The Junta de Andalucía has evacuated 3,000 people from about 1,000 homes as a preventive measure due to the red alert for rain in the area. The evacuations took place in Álora, Cártama, Alhaurín de la Torre, Pizarra, and Málaga capital.
The Minister of the Presidency, Antonio Sanz, explained that the evacuations are being carried out in specific areas linked to the banks of the Guadalhorce River, where a high risk of flooding has been detected. Shelters have been set up by the Andalusian government to accommodate the evacuated people.
Sanz emphasized the importance of acting with enough time for citizens to react and prepare adequately, avoiding direct emergency situations. Those affected are being moved to sports centers in each locality, where they will receive assistance from Emergency services.
The minister pointed out that the decision to evacuate preventively was made in coordination with the mayors and communicated to the Government of Spain to receive support from security forces in implementing preventive measures.
A shelter system has been activated to relocate displaced individuals, amid warnings of possible overflow from the Guadalhorce River. Sanz highlighted that the preventive action has been carried out in a planned manner and not improvised.
