The transport of goods, represented by trucks and vans, is fundamental in terms of road safety in Spain. Although passenger cars make up 70% of the vehicle fleet in the country, cargo vehicles are the second most common type on the roads, reaching 14% of the total. On the other hand, buses represent approximately 0.2% of vehicles in circulation.
In this sense, the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard and the local police of Añover de Tajo and Villafranca de los Caballeros have joined a new campaign for the control of trucks and buses. During this campaign, inspections will be intensified to verify the necessary documentation and permits for legal operation.
The collected data shows that trucks with a maximum authorized mass of up to 3,500 kg have experienced a slight decrease in accidents, from 1,708 in 2022 to 1,635 in 2023. However, trucks over 3,500 kg recorded an increase in traffic accidents, reaching 3,584 in 2023.
As for buses, the number of accidents has grown, from 2,286 in 2022 to 2,662 in 2023. Most of these accidents occur in urban areas. Therefore, the importance of awareness and control campaigns like the one recently conducted, where multiple complaints were filed, is emphasized.
The next special campaign for monitoring and controlling trucks and buses will take place between February 17 and February 23 in the province of Toledo. During this period, attention will focus on aspects such as professional driving, qualifications, permits, and the established rest times for drivers. Proper securing of the load in these vehicles plays a crucial role in stability and safety on the road, emphasizing the importance of maintaining optimal conditions to prevent accidents.
