Judas Tradition in Toledo this Holy Saturday

The neighborhood association La Cornisa revives the tradition of burning Judases in Toledo, a pagan rite that gathers dozens of people every Holy Saturday.

The La Cornisa neighborhood association, located in Toledo, keeps alive an ancestral tradition of the locality by burning two effigies, one of a man and the other of a woman, in the Barco Pasaje every Holy Saturday. José María Redondo, president of the association, highlights that this custom used to be practiced in other neighborhoods but has lost popularity over time. Thanks to various boards of directors over 40 years, La Cornisa has managed to preserve this particular ritual.

Supported by Civil Protection and the Local Police, the burning of the Judases takes place at nine o'clock in the evening in the presence of neighbors, curious onlookers, and children who watch in wonder as the flames consume the effigies. While the ducks from the Tagus River approach to see the spectacle, a newcomer to these celebrations humorously comments to a friend about the appropriate attire for the occasion, adding a touch of fun to the tradition.

The event, which occurs in a hidden space near the river, offers a quiet pause from the bustling tourist Semana Santa. After the burning of the Judases, attendees can enjoy snacks and grilled chorizos, sharing a moment of camaraderie and tradition in a relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere. Although this celebration is not part of the official Semana Santa program, it has become a rooted and cherished practice within the local community.
