Several municipalities in Valencia have issued recommendations to citizens to avoid dumping sludge onto public roads and thus prevent the collapse of the sewage and drainage network, in light of the alert for the arrival of a new dana that could bring heavy rains to the area in the coming days.
The Emergency Coordination Center of the Generalitat has established a yellow rain alert in the coastline of Castellón and Valencia, as well as in the northern coastline of Alicante, in addition to coastal phenomena in the southern coastline of Valencia. Rosa Touris, head of Forest Fire Prevention, reported on this situation after the meeting of the Integrated Operational Coordination Center (Cecopi) on Monday, where the follow-up of the expected episode of meteorological instability in the Comunitat Valenciana was analyzed.
Specifically, concrete recommendations have been given in several municipalities. In Aranza, residents have been asked to contact the Town Hall to coordinate the proper extraction of sludge from garages, avoiding dumping it into sewers or collectors. Similarly, in Picanya, residents have been requested not to push the sludge towards the sewers, warning that they would obstruct the system and that it would be removed with specialized machinery.
Additionally, in Alfafar the population has been asked to leave vehicles outside the municipality or on wider streets to facilitate truck access to the sewage and collector system for emptying and preventing potential problems. Furthermore, in Carlet, an orange alert for heavy rains has been issued for Wednesday, with a possible accumulation of up to 40 l/m2 in one hour, highlighting the importance of taking necessary precautions.
In this context, the Town Hall of Aldaia has emphasized the importance of not throwing more sludge onto public roads to avoid public health problems in the case of intense rains, proposing to resume cleaning tasks afterwards. Likewise, in Catarroja, the saturation of the sewage network has been evidenced, and residents have been asked to refrain from dumping sludge, as the rains could overwhelm the drains and cause sanitary inconveniences.
