A recent wave of storms in Spain led to the closure of schools and the suspension of classes. According to the Spanish newspaper El Pais, the affected areas of Valencia were declared in a state of emergency from last night. These storms followed two weeks after the death of more than 223 people and the destruction of thousands of homes due to sudden flooding in Valencia and other regions of the country.
"Meteorological experts report that within 12 hours, up to 180 mm of rainfall can occur." The national meteorological agency of Spain, Emet, warned of increased readiness in nine areas of the country ahead of a new wave of heavy rains. Special attention is being given to the province of Malaga in Andalusia and the southern part of Tarragona in Catalonia, after Emet warned of possible heavy rains that could cause serious flooding.
High-speed train service between Malaga and Madrid was suspended, and more than 4,000 people were evacuated from their homes throughout the province. In the affected areas, many schools and shops were closed.
