World Leaders Condolences to Spain Over Train Disaster

My deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of the train accident and to the Spanish people. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all the people of Spain.

World leaders on Monday conveyed their condolences and solidarity to Spain over the train accident that occurred on Sunday afternoon in the Andalusian town of Amaduz in the south of the country, a disaster in which at least 39 people have died and more than a hundred have been injured.

Heads of State, Government, or ministers from Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Serbia, Monaco, India, Pakistan, Ukraine, Portugal, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Norway, France, Greece, or Israel have been conveying their condolences through press releases or social media messages since Sunday afternoon, when two trains collided in Amaduz, a locality in Córdoba, in southern Spain.

Pope Leo XIV also sent a telegram to the President of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, Luis Argüello, in which he said he was "deeply saddened to learn of the painful news of the train accident".

The last three carriages of a train from the company Iryo, which had left Málaga (south) at 6:40 p.m. on Sunday, bound for Madrid with 317 people on board, derailed at 7:39 p.m. and invaded the adjacent track, on which another Renfe convoy was heading to Huelva (south) at the same moment, which also derailed.

The EU, ready to "offer support"

The heads of the European Union (EU) institutions expressed their condolences to the victims and families on Monday morning over the train accident in Adamuz, and stated that the European emergency center is "ready to offer support" to Spain "if requested".

President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on Sunday night: "I receive the terrible news from Córdoba." "I learned with great sadness of the train accident in Andalucía, where two high-speed trains derailed. Italy is close to the pain of Spain in this tragedy. Our thoughts are with the victims, the injured and their families," Meloni said in a statement.

Furthermore, the Italian state group Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), which is the main shareholder of Iryo, expressed its condolences and offered its support to the Spanish authorities and Renfe following the train accident.

There were also reactions from Portugal and France, countries that border Spain to the east and north of the peninsula, respectively. In a statement, the Portuguese Presidency, held by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, presented "to His Majesty King Felipe VI its regret for the tragic consequences of the derailment of two high-speed trains in the Spanish municipality of Adamuz, in Córdoba".

And the French President, Emmanuel Macron, expressed his regret for the "tragedy" on the railway through a message posted on the social network X and written in Spanish. "I thank the rescue teams for their great work in responding to this tragedy. I wish for a speedy and full recovery to the injured. Tonight you are in my thoughts".

For his part, the President of the European Council, António Costa, declared himself "consternated" by the disaster and shared his "deepest solidarity with the victims, their loved ones and the Spanish people".

Also, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, said that her thoughts are "with all those who lost their lives tonight in Córdoba." "I wish you to find strength and comfort in these very difficult moments, and for the injured to recover soon. Europe is with the Spanish people in these very difficult moments," Metsola stated.

On the other hand, the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, expressed her "deepest condolences" to the relatives and loved ones of the victims, as well as a speedy recovery to the injured, in the face of "devastating" news.

Neighboring countries show their sadness

The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, was one of the first leaders to convey her condolences for the accident that occurred in Andalucía. "My deepest condolences to their families and loved ones. France is by your side," Macron wrote. "A train tragedy strikes Andalucía."
