On the night of Wednesday, October 23, a fire in a home in Montefrío, in the Granada region of Loja, resulted in the death of a 75-year-old woman. The incident took place shortly after nine in the evening when neighbors alerted about flames in a house in the La Paz neighborhood and mentioned that a woman was trapped inside. Although it has not been officially confirmed, nearby residents indicated that the woman was not alone and that her husband was evacuated by relatives.
Upon alert, the emergency protocol was activated, and the Provincial Fire Consortium, the Emergency Medical Services 061, the Civil Guard, the Local Police, and the Montefrío Civil Protection Volunteer Group were notified. According to the Local Police, the fire was located on the upper floor, but smoke affected the entire house. The Loja firefighters managed to extinguish the fire, which left one room completely destroyed by the flames.
Despite the efforts of medical services to save her life, the woman died due to smoke inhalation, according to sources from the Armed Institute. She was found on the lower floor, specifically in the kitchen, unconscious and in cardiac arrest.
