Last Thursday, January 30, the Spanish publisher Dos Bigotes decided to suspend the publication of the autobiography of actress Karla Sofía Gascón. This decision was based on the controversy generated by old tweets from the actress that displayed racist and homophobic content published on her Twitter account in the past.
Jacques Audiard, director of the movie 'Emilia Pérez' in which Gascón is the lead, expressed his distance from the actress due to the controversy. Audiard commented on his concern for the damage that Gascón's comments could cause to both the film crew and others.
Karla Sofía Gascón's book, titled 'An Extraordinary Story', was set to be released on March 17, but the publisher decided to cancel its publication to remain true to their values of equality, inclusion, and diversity. Dos Bigotes stated that although they had had a positive interaction with the author in the past, they could not endorse the statements made by her on social media previously.
The publisher affirmed that despite not sharing Gascón's controversial statements, they believed in the possibility that the passage of time, learning, and experiences could lead to positive change in people. After a screening of the movie 'Emilia Pérez', in which Gascón received significant recognition, the actress offered the editors the opportunity to publish a biographical novel that had previously been released in Mexico in 2018.
