Spanish Minister Acknowledges Historical Injustices to Mexico's Indigenous Peoples

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum celebrated the statements by Spain's Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, who acknowledged the injustices committed against indigenous peoples during the conquest. Sheinbaum described the Spanish minister's gesture as 'a first step,' highlighting the importance of recognizing history, grievances, and apologizing. 'Apologies enrich governments and peoples. It is not humiliating, on the contrary, to recognize history, recognize grievances, apologize or regret,' she stated. Sheinbaum also reiterated the demand that Spain, in her view, owes Mexico an apology. This is the first time a high-ranking official from the Spanish government has expressed regret for the injustices committed against Mexico's indigenous peoples.
