President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, stated that for his government, the "normalization of relations" with Mexico is a priority, a country he considers "very close in all aspects and in all dimensions" with "shades that it is good to recognize." The Spanish Executive said this in an interview with the newspaper El País, published this Sunday, in which he highlighted the importance of discretion in diplomacy, although he assured that Spain seeks to strengthen bilateral ties. "We are at a moment when diplomacy requires, needs a certain discretion, but I can guarantee you that for Spain, the normalization of our relations is a priority," the president added. He also noted that recognizing the bright and dark sides of shared history contributes to better mutual understanding and the building of stronger relations: "it is good to recognize those shades to better understand each other and, therefore, to continue building those relationships on much firmer grounds." The words of Pedro Sánchez come days after the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain, José Manuel Albares, recognized the injustices committed against the original peoples during the conquest. During the inauguration of the exhibition "The Woman in Indigenous Mexico" at the Cervantes Institute in Madrid, Albares stated: "There has also been pain, pain, and injustice towards the original peoples to whom this exhibition is dedicated, there was injustice, and today it is right to recognize it and right to regret it because that is also part of our shared history and we cannot deny it or forget it." President Claudia Sheinbaum celebrated the gesture of the Spanish foreign minister, calling it "a first step" and highlighting the importance of recognizing history and grievances: "Pardon enlarges governments and peoples. It is not humiliating, on the contrary, to recognize history, to recognize grievances, to ask for forgiveness or to regret. It was a process of violent invasion."
