The General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) has unanimously approved Teresa Peramato as the new Attorney General of the State after confirming she meets the legal requirements. Peramato, who was promoted twice by Dolores Delgado and Álvaro García Ortiz, is a Spanish jurist of recognized prestige with over fifteen years of professional experience. She began her career in the prosecutor's offices of Tenerife, Valladolid, and Barcelona before joining the Madrid Provincial Prosecutor's Office. In 2005, she was appointed as the delegated prosecutor for the Section on Violence Against Women. In 2018, she took on the role of prosecutor attached to the Prosecutor's Office before the Constitutional Court.
Notably, the opinion of the CGPJ and the Justice Commission is not binding on the executive branch, a fact demonstrated when the current acting Attorney General was appointed despite being deemed unsuitable by the previous council. Peramato's term is governed by the current Statute, which sets a duration of four years and allows for early dismissal only under specific circumstances, such as a request by herself, incompatibilities, incapacity, serious or repeated failure to perform her duties, or the fall of the government that proposed her. The CGPJ's approval comes days after the Supreme Court ruled that García Ortiz's decision to promote his former boss, Dolores Delgado, constituted a "clear and undeniable abuse of power."
