Spain Confirms Release of Five Citizens from Venezuela

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Venezuela has released five Spanish citizens imprisoned in that country, one of them a dual national, who are now preparing to travel to Spain with assistance from the embassy in Caracas. The Ministry, led by José Manuel Albares, informed in a press release of the release of these citizens as part of the "significant number" of people whose release was announced this Thursday by the president of the Venezuelan Parliament, Jorge Rodríguez. "The Government of Spain conveys its joy to these citizens, their families, and friends," adds the Foreign Affairs note, which also reveals that Albares was able to speak with all of them "personally". Following the arrest of Nicolás Maduro by the United States, Spain issued a verbal note this week asking the government of Delcy Rodríguez for the immediate release of Spanish political prisoners in the country. Between fourteen and twenty Spaniards were imprisoned in Venezuela for political reasons or considered arbitrary by the end of 2025. This Thursday, the president of the Venezuelan Parliament and chief chavismo negotiator, Jorge Rodríguez, announced the "release" of a "significant number of people", both Venezuelans and foreigners—without specifying the number or conditions—as a "unilateral gesture" to "consolidate the peace and peaceful coexistence" of the country.
