Spanish Prosecutor's Office Investigates Julio Iglesias Over Harassment Allegations

Madrid, Jan 13 (EFE). - The Prosecutor's Office of Spain's National Court has opened proceedings to investigate a complaint filed on January 5 against singer Julio Iglesias. It emerged on Monday that two women who worked for him have reported alleged cases of harassment and sexual assault in 2021. According to sources from the Prosecutor's Office, the Public Ministry has already initiated pre-procedural criminal investigation proceedings, which remain secret, to determine the scope of the complaint. Due to the nature of the alleged facts and the secrecy of the proceedings, the sources have not specified which crimes are being investigated. The opening of this investigation comes on the same day that it was made public that two women have reported alleged cases of harassment and sexual assault in 2021 by the singer, in an investigation by Spain's eldiario.es and Univisión Noticias in the United States. Both media outlets have corroborated the testimonies of the allegedly affected women with interviews to professionals who treated their sequels and say they have documents that support their labor relationship with the Spanish interpreter. The incidents would have occurred in Julio Iglesias's homes in the Dominican Republic, Bahamas, and Spain. One of the women was a domestic employee and the other a physiotherapist. The former employees provided the editors of the extensive journalistic report with labor documents, photographs, recordings, WhatsApp messages, call logs, and Julio Iglesias's requests for migration permits to the governments of Spain, Bahamas, and the Dominican Republic, according to both media. The accounts of both employees describe sexual assaults such as non-consensual penetrations, as well as slaps, humiliations, and systematic labor abuse against them and other employees. The investigation, signed by five journalists, states that the singer has not responded to any attempts to contact him or his legal representatives. The EFE Agency has also tried to get the version from Iglesias's environment without success. Meanwhile, the Spanish government supports going 'to the end' in the investigation of the complaints and the government spokeswoman, Elma Saiz, asked that there be 'no space for impunity in any area of society'. 'We are not going to look the other way', said the spokeswoman on Tuesday at the press conference after the Council of Ministers and after granting credibility to the published information. For her part, the Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo, stressed on social network X that 'in the face of machismo, one cannot look away because denial intensifies the problem' and trusted that 'it will be investigated and taken to the end'.
