Spain Closes Airspace to US Aircraft Involved in Iran Conflict

The Spanish government, led by a left-leaning party, has closed its airspace to American aircraft participating in the war against Iran and has prevented Washington from using its bases. Defense Minister Margarita Robles announced this on Monday. Robles told reporters that 'the use of bases and, of course, the use of Spanish airspace for operations related to the war in Iran is not permitted,' thus confirming a report published by El País. Spanish Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Carlos Cuebo stated in an interview broadcast on Monday on Cadena Ser radio that this measure 'is part of the Spanish government's decision not to participate in or support this war, which was started unilaterally and violates international law'. Earlier, El País and the Spanish news agency Europa Press reported that the ban applies not only to flights departing from Spanish territory but also to the overflight of military aircraft launching from bases in the United Kingdom or France.
