New Spanish Ambassador Appointed in Argentina

After five months, the President of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has appointed Joaquín María de Arístegui as ambassador to Argentina, a decision that has been highlighted by the Foreign Ministry as a conciliatory gesture. From the San Martín Palace, they commit to seeking points of connection to achieve the welfare of the citizens of both countries.

In a statement issued by the portfolio led by Diana Mondino, the close relationship between Argentina and Spain was emphasized, based on deep human and social ties. The shared language and culture were mentioned, as well as the significant economic, commercial, and investment relationships that should guide bilateral relations.

Despite the tensions between Pedro Sánchez and the president of the Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and the founder of La Libertad Avanza, Javier Milei, which led to the recall of ambassador María Jesús Alonso Jiménez in May, the decision to appoint a new ambassador has surprised many. Joaquín María de Arístegui, until now the Spanish government's representative in Colombia, has been selected to occupy this position.

Foreign Minister Diana Mondino welcomed the new ambassador through a message on social media, recognizing the importance of strengthening ties between both countries at the political and institutional levels. The libertarian government indicated that the relationship between the governments should reflect the intensity of the bonds between societies and promised to work on strengthening it to achieve optimal levels of trust and mutual respect.

Additionally, the importance of Spain as a key partner for the realization of an agreement between the European Union and Mercosur was underscored. They committed to increasing trade exchanges and to achieving a swift conclusion of the Association Agreement between both regions. Mention was also made of the Ibero-American Community of Nations and the importance of strengthening it as a space for progress and consensus for the benefit of the peoples of Ibero-America, especially in anticipation of the upcoming Ibero-American Summit to be held in Spain in 2026. The priority is always to seek points of connection for the benefit of citizens.
