The Influence of Diet on Cardiovascular Health

Experts from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya highlight how an adequate diet can prevent cardiovascular diseases, emphasizing the importance of the Mediterranean Diet and the consumption of antioxidants.

Cardiovascular diseases, which are one of the leading causes of death worldwide, can be prevented or reduced with proper nutrition, according to experts from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC).

Gemma Chiva Blanch, professor and researcher at UOC, highlights the influence of diet on heart health, especially in the development of atherothrombosis, a combination of atherosclerosis and thrombosis that contributes to cardiovascular diseases.

Among the risk factors associated with these diseases are overweight, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes, which can be mitigated with proper nutrition. For example, a diet rich in omega-3, carotenoids, and low in meats and sugars is recommended to avoid heart health issues.

To maintain cardiovascular health, it is essential to regulate salt intake, adopt the Mediterranean Diet, include foods with antioxidants, and maintain a body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9. It is highlighted that the Mediterranean Diet has been shown to reduce the risk of heart attacks by 30% in patients who follow it for five years.

The FAO emphasizes the importance of following sustainable diets that have a low environmental impact and promote food security and nutrition. These diets should be accessible, fair, and respectful of ecosystems, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda.

In conclusion, taking care of nutrition and adopting healthy habits can be key to preventing cardiovascular diseases and promoting a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle in the long term.
