The leader of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has demanded in the Congress of Deputies the resignation of the leadership of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the president of Red Eléctrica, Beatriz Corredor. He also called for the calling of general elections, blaming the government of Pedro Sánchez for bringing Spain to a widespread collapse after the serious blackout on April 28.
During the parliamentary debate focused on the energy crisis and defense policy, Feijóo criticized the Executive for ignoring several warnings of instability risk in the last five years and for poor management that culminated in the massive electrical supply failure. Moreover, he challenged Sánchez to "take a walk together down the street" to "test what people are saying."
Feijóo also requested an international and independent investigation into the causes of the blackout to avoid a new international embarrassment. In a harsh intervention, he criticized the government's reaction and transparency, joking about the personal situation of the president's brother.
The Popular Party positively evaluated Feijóo's assertiveness in the debate. In energy matters, he criticized the fanaticism and ideological model of the government, advocating for technical criteria and a balanced mix that includes extending the useful life of nuclear power plants alongside the promotion of renewables. The fourth largest economy in the eurozone is not going to tolerate that what happened on April 28 goes without resignations, Feijóo stated.
