José Ramón Gómez Besteiro «categorically» has no intention of resigning despite internal criticism in the PSdeG over the handling of alleged harassment cases involving Galician socialists. In his opinion, he could not have done more, as «according to the law, a complaint from the victim is necessary to take action». He has made it clear that he does not intend to leave the party leadership. When he himself met with «a third party» who recounted the alleged harassment of the Provincial President by one of the victims, he says he encouraged her to report it. «The one who has to resign is the one who harasses,» he stated at an urgent press conference this Tuesday afternoon to announce the measures the party has taken following a new complaint of harassment, in this case workplace harassment, in the Ourense town of Barbadás. Besteiro wanted with these explanations on the new case to convince that the party has always acted «with speed and firmness» in cases of harassment, although internal voices of the Galician PSOE consider that there was not in the processing of the complaints, in those cases for sexual harassment, that several women presented against the president of the Provincial Council of Lugo and mayor of Monforte de Lemos, José Tomé. The leader of the Galician socialists insists that the party acted as it should have.
Galician Socialist Leader Refuses to Resign
PSdeG leader José Ramón Gómez Besteiro rejects calls to resign, stating he acted within the law and that responsibility for harassment lies with the accused, not the party.
