The president of the Board, Juanma Moreno, during a presentation at a senior center in Seville, highlighted the importance of digitalization for the progress of society. In this context, the beginning of the implementation of the wifi network Andalucía Vuela has been announced, which aims to bring internet to all corners of the region.
The program includes the installation of 120,000 wifi points throughout Andalucía, leveraging a recently established cabling network to offer fast and free connections in areas that previously lacked them. An open network is expected to be available, providing free coverage in 10,000 locations, emphasizing the digital inclusion of the older population that needs to learn how to use these technologies.
Juanma Moreno emphasized that digitalization will help address depopulation in rural areas, while aiming to bring connections to municipalities with about 20,000 inhabitants, which will mark a significant advancement in the realm of digital society. Renowned companies such as Telefónica and Vodafone are collaborating on this project, along with local companies, with the goal of achieving full digitalization for Andalucía by 2030, positioning it above the national average.
The relevance of having wifi today is highlighted, as, according to the president of the Board, mobility is limited without internet access. Moreno stressed: "Nowadays if you don’t have wifi you can’t move around." It was also mentioned that Andalucía aspires to have the largest wifi network in Europe in the near future, as an indicator of its commitment to digitalization.
The Andalucía Vuela program seeks to promote digital inclusion, providing internet access and training in the use of digital tools to those who, due to age or lack of training, have been marginalized from this process. This initiative is not only aimed at connectivity but is also proposed as a strategy to combat depopulation in rural areas, where the lack of connectivity limits the daily lives of inhabitants by preventing them from accessing public services or maintaining communication with their loved ones through digital platforms.
