Castellar de Santiago Faces Telecom Crisis

Residents of Castellar de Santiago, Spain, are experiencing major disruptions due to a lack of telephone and internet service from Movistar for over a week, affecting local businesses and healthcare access. The mayor has reached out to authorities for assistance in resolving the issue.

The socialist mayor of Castellar de Santiago (Ciudad Real), María del Carmen Ballesteros, has reported the lack of telephone and internet service in her municipality, which is contracted with the company Movistar. This situation has led to the paralysis of much of the administrative activity in this small town in Castilla-La Mancha, with just over 1500 inhabitants, located in the south of the province.

The incident began a week ago, on Monday, January 27, and although the service was temporarily restored on Sunday afternoon, interruptions in the phone line continued throughout Monday. Ballesteros has expressed her concern, mentioning that the lack of connection affects not only the functioning of the town hall but also essential services such as healthcare.

The mayor has expressed her outrage at the sense of helplessness they find themselves in, highlighting that small populations are often abandoned by large companies, while local businesses like Radio Banda Ancha respond more effectively to these problems. Moreover, she has communicated that the Town Hall has contacted the competent authorities to demand the restoration of the contracted service.

Despite efforts to resolve the issue, the cause of the failure has still not been identified, as Movistar has not provided a clear explanation on the matter. The mayor has lamented the setbacks that this situation is causing to local businesses and residents, especially elderly people who might need urgent assistance.

In light of this situation, the Town Hall of Castellar de Santiago has requested the intervention of the relevant authorities in order to pressure the telephone company to solve the problem. Meanwhile, the local community continues to face the difficulties arising from the lack of communication, and a prompt solution from Movistar is awaited.
