Spanish Language Academy unveils dictionary update with new words

Buenos Aires, December 16 (NA) – The Royal Spanish Language Academy (RAE) presented this Monday the 23.8.1 update of the Dictionary of the Spanish Language (DLE), incorporating terms such as 'crudevorism', 'log in', 'microtheater', 'millennial', and 'tourismophobia'. This is an advance look at the 24th edition, scheduled for November 2026. As explained by the director of the RAE and president of the Association of Academies of the Spanish Language (ASALE), Santiago Muñoz Machado, this is an update with 'fewer pretensions' than in other years, but it is representative of the work that will result in a 'much more updated and broader' dictionary. At the presentation, held at the Academy's headquarters, he was accompanied by the head of the Lexicography Institute, Elena Zamora. Among the highlights are additions from colloquial and everyday language. The expression 'spinning top toy' is also added to describe someone who, after achieving fame, loses social or professional relevance, and 'vulture' as a person who pursues fleeting sexual relationships. The digital and social media sphere contributes terms like 'login' and 'log in'. In total, the update brings together 330 novelties. Muñoz Machado emphasized that the incorporation process is 'slow and exhaustive' and is based on the actual use of words, evaluated by commissions in Spain and America.
