Renewal of Nuclear Power Plant License in Trillo

The Spanish government has renewed the operating license for the Trillo nuclear power plant for an additional ten years, extending its life beyond 2034. This move follows regulatory safety approvals and highlights the economic role of Trillo in electricity supply, despite concerns over increased operational costs.

The Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge has authorized the extension of the operation of the Trillo nuclear power plant in the province of Guadalajara for another ten years, according to what was published in the Official State Bulletin (BOE). With this extension, the plant can operate until at least 2034, thus exceeding 40 years of operation.

The Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) issued a favorable report in July, supporting the safety and proper functioning of the plant, which has allowed this extension. The storage of slightly enriched uranium fuel elements is authorized, maintaining adequate safety levels.

The Trillo nuclear power plant has a pressurized water reactor of 3,010 MWt and is operated by the Almaraz-Trillo Nuclear Power Plants Society (CNAT). However, CNAT has criticized the 30 percent increase in the fee charged by Enresa, which, combined with existing taxes, represents a significant economic burden for nuclear activity.

On the other hand, a comprehensive safety review of the plant has been conducted in preparation for its 40 years of operation in 2028. The plant is owned by several companies, such as Iberdrola Nuclear Generation, and its gross energy production in 2023 was 8,295 GWh, contributing to the electricity supply for two million homes.

CNAT highlights the vital role of the Trillo plant in the electricity supply and its contribution to the local economy, generating direct and indirect employment. The plant has been recognized for its high safety standards and continuous investments in modernization and technological improvements. Trillo contributes approximately three percent of the annual electricity demand in Spain.

In summary, the renewal of the authorization for the Trillo nuclear power plant involves an extension of its operation beyond the original 40 years, with a focus on maintaining high safety standards and contributing to the national electricity supply.
