Four young people, aged between 18 and 20 years, are under investigation for traffic safety offenses after being recorded by security cameras while racing in the N-120 tunnels connecting Orense and the province of León. The events took place in the early hours of November 16, when an accident occurred in the municipality of Rubiá involving two cars, whose occupants claimed it was caused by the sudden appearance of a wild boar on the road.
The individuals drove their vehicles occupying both directions of traffic before two of them started a high-speed race, with one remaining in the opposite lane. One of the drivers lost control of his vehicle while trying to avoid the animal, which caused the accident. However, the evidence gathered by the Traffic Civil Guard did not match the version provided by the accident's protagonists, leading to an investigation to clarify what happened.
According to authorities, those involved are known in the Valdeorras region for driving at high speeds and recklessly through several municipalities. In addition to driving in the wrong direction, they also overtook on a continuous line or in an area of reduced visibility. As a result, three of the four drivers are being investigated for reckless driving, which can carry prison sentences and fines, as well as the loss of their driving licenses for several years.
Two of the drivers are also being investigated for attempted fraud for reporting to the insurance company with false circumstances regarding the occurrence of the incident. The Traffic Civil Guard noted that, had it not been for the safety systems in the vehicles, the accident could have had much more tragic consequences.
