In El Brillante, a wave of fires in 2020 led residents to request private surveillance; however, the request was denied by the Subdelegation of the Government, which is investigating the more than 20 incidents that occurred in the area. Initially, three individuals were suspected, but the investigation has led to the prosecution of two accused. According to the National Police, one of the accused, 20 years old, was placed at each of the fire scenes, while it is noted that in some cases another individual, identified as S.E., also participated.
The judge has ordered imprisonment for the alleged perpetrator of these fires in El Brillante, accusing him of a crime of damage with serious risk to the lives of people. The Prosecutor's Office requests sentences of 11 years in prison for the first accused and 10 years and three months for the second. The fires, which occurred between July and August 2020, surprised the local residents due to the way they erupted, causing alarm in the community.
The accused face charges for setting fire to seven perimeter fences between July and October, endangering residents who were sleeping in their homes. After detaining one of the suspects in October 2020, the Prosecutor's Office is now bringing both accused before the court for a continued crime of arson in inhabited houses with grave risk to individuals. One of the accused admitted to the facts, supporting the police evidence against him.
Investigators were able to tighten the net around the detainee after discovering that he had a motorcycle similar to the one used in the fires, although the motive behind them has not been revealed. The events occurred in the early morning, and according to the judge handling the case, the accused acted with the intention of provoking fires, regardless of the risk to the inhabitants of the affected homes. The case continues its judicial course while incriminating evidence is being gathered, such as a frame of a vehicle related to the fires.
