Political Turmoil in Spain: Budget Approval in Question

Ione Belarra forecasts Pedro Sánchez's inability to secure public budgets, with the PP proposing a law to restore pension valuations. A tumultuous atmosphere surrounds the Congress as crucial decrees face rejection.

The Secretary General of Podemos, Ione Belarra, warns that Pedro Sánchez will not be able to pass a public budget and remain as President of the Government until 2027. In response, the PP has proposed a law to restore the revaluation of pensions, announced by Juan Bravo. At the same time, deputy Nogueras has challenged the Government to present another decree addressing only this issue and the subsidy for public transport.

In Congress, two decrees have been consecutively repealed, something that has only happened once in the previous legislature. The repeal of the omnibus decree implies the reversal of the pension revaluation, extension of transport subsidies, extension of the prohibition on evictions, and increase of debt for reconstruction in the Valencian Community.

Carles Puigdemont has demanded that Sánchez submit to a vote of confidence, which, if not passed, would force him to resign. On the other hand, the Government has suspended sectorial talks with the PSOE until an urgent meeting in Switzerland to improve relations. Minister Félix Bolaños has highlighted the parliamentary performance of the Government in 2024.

Despite last-minute negotiations, the Government failed to push through its initiative due to a lack of support from Junts. The legislature remains in limbo due to the repeal of the decree. The PP and Vox have protested against it, while Junts is left unsatisfied and distrustful regarding the approval of the general budgets.

The third decree, related to the reform for subsidizing those who delay their retirement, received support in Congress with the backing of the PP. This beginning of the year has been difficult for the Government, which is seeking scapegoats after suffering a major defeat. Despite this, the Executive rejects calling an extraordinary Council of Ministers to address these measures.

In the specific case of the omnibus decree, which contained several measures, it was a setback for the Government after being overturned in Congress. Meanwhile, Vox has opposed all urgent measures presented. The votes resulted in two of the three debated legislative decrees being rejected, including this broad measure that generated discontent and distrust among various Government partners.
