Diplomatic Crisis as Ambassador Alberto Antón is Dismissed

Alberto Antón, Spain's ambassador to Belgium, has been unexpectedly dismissed by Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares. Antón criticizes the decision as arbitrary and damaging to diplomatic morale, especially amidst critical international engagements for Spain.

The Ambassador of Spain in Belgium, Alberto Antón, expressed his discontent in a letter addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, regarding his surprising dismissal. Antón believes that Albares' decision demonstrates a lack of judgment and sows insecurity among diplomats.

In the letter, Antón states that he was informed by the Undersecretary, Xavier Martín, about Albares' decision to dismiss him from the Embassy in Brussels. Antón indicates that this maneuver, besides being clumsy, ridiculous, and petty, aims to tarnish his professional reputation of over forty years as a public servant.

Despite complying with the decision of his dismissal, Antón expresses his bewilderment at Albares' lack of judgment. In a fragment of his letter to the minister, Antón mentions: "I would have wished to contribute with my work to the success of the visit of our Kings, to whom I hold a great respect and admiration, with our Head of State being the best representative of Spain abroad."

The ambassador points out that the decision to dismiss him is part of a series of arbitrary changes in embassies, mentioning the case of Marcos Alonso, who was favored with a new position. Antón expresses that this situation affects his work and wastes his connections in Belgium, especially in an important year for bilateral relations with the celebration of the Europalia 2025 festival.

The ambassador also shows concern for the younger diplomats and their motivation to serve the State. Antón notes that the current situation may discourage newcomers to the Diplomatic Career.

Antón's letter comes after rumors about the circumstances of his dismissal, including the fact that he allegedly fell asleep during Albares' intervention at a conference of ambassadors. Antón asserts that his dismissal was not due to his professional performance and regrets that the idea has spread that he was removed for falling asleep at a public event.
