Shock plan to boost the use of Catalan

The Government of the Generalitat, led by Francesc Xavier Vila, will allocate 9 million euros to increase the use of Catalan through courses and training in municipalities. The aim is to reduce the number of people with low knowledge of the language and facilitate its learning. The number of course spots will grow significantly in 2025.

The Language Policy Advisor of the Generalitat, Francesc Xavier Vila, announced a shock plan of around 9 million euros to promote the use of Catalan in courses and positions of the Consortium for Linguistic Normalization and the municipalities. This project will include a new line of support so that municipalities without representation from the Consortium can also access training with the aim of reducing the number of people with limited knowledge of the Catalan language and encouraging its learning.

In an interview on 'Ser Catalunya', Vila emphasized that this initiative is part of the investment agreements between ERC and PSC to improve the use of Catalan. He stressed the importance of conveying the relevance of speaking the language and facilitating its learning. In this regard, he mentioned: "I believe that a too simplistic reading has been made because only some percentages are being considered".

Regarding Ðmnium Cultural's request to expand the offer of Catalan courses to 200,000 places, Vila indicated that it will be carried out progressively due to the need to hire staff and organize the courses. He announced that throughout 2025, a substantial growth in training offerings is expected.

In another interview on TV3, the Counselor pointed out that plans are in place to reach at least 30,000 places in future courses as a measure to reduce waiting lists. He also mentioned that a priority of the department is to finalize the National Pact for the Language, as the text is in an advanced stage of development.
