Rescue of migrants in Gran Canaria

A canoe with 52 sub-Saharan migrants was rescued in the waters of Gran Canaria. Most are in good condition, although one was hospitalized with minor injuries.

A new cayuco with 52 people on board was detected in the waters of Gran Canaria last midnight, interrupting the calm in the Canary Route. The Maritime Rescue team carried out the rescue of this vessel near the island.

The migrants of sub-Saharan origin were assisted by the health care team composed of Canary Emergency Services, Primary Care, and Red Cross at the Arguineguín dock. Although most of them were in good health, one man had to be evacuated to the hospital due to minor injuries.

The Guardamar Urania was responsible for transporting the migrants who were traveling in this cayuco, which was spotted about 40 kilometers south of the island. The vessel was initially located at sea by a merchant ship around 8:30 PM yesterday, at which point the corresponding protocols were activated.

In the words of the authorities, this new incident highlights the ongoing arrival of migrants to the coasts of the Canary Islands, emphasizing the need to maintain vigilance and provide necessary assistance to those who risk their lives in search of a better future.
